We are an island community, surrounded by an amazing, abundant and mysterious ocean.  The ocean has a wide spectrum of moods, but the one I am drawn to is the quiet expanse of the reef at low tide.  I have enjoyed this because it brings into focus things that are often hidden by the lens of several feet of water.  It exposes the dangerous coral heads, it allows one to see the reef predators moving through the rocks, and it opens to view the astounding worlds of the tide pools with their myriad life forms and colors.  I am hoping that our discussions on this blog can bring into view the issues of early education, social justice, Hawaiian values and perspectives, and human and natural resource sustainability from a perspective of “low tide”…open, without varnish, and real.  Please join me in this adventure!

I agree with your perception of the mystery found at low tide. As a child, I clambered over the exposed rocks in search of something captivating or intriguing to observe. As I combed through the reef, I imagined finding a unique shell or flotsam that had been castoff from a shipwreck. I loved finding a pool I could peer into and study the smallest of sea creatures.
I imagine that for the ancient Hawaiians, the greatest mysteries of life rose from the ocean.
